The PlayTable is a tabletop console unlike the world has seen before. It isn’t quite augmented reality and it’s definitely not virtual reality — everything you see, feel, and touch on the PlayTable is 100% real. Therefore, we are something different. A new way for physical objects to interact with the digital world — we call it: mixed reality. But why do we choose to bridge the gap between digital and physical worlds? Why not just use a virtual world to immerse the user? PlayTable believes that there is a unique experience that comes from playing with other people. This type of experience is truly unlocked when you are playing with the people you care about, laughing with people you care about, and are actually within arm’s reach of people you are playing with. This is something that no other console can offer. The way we see it, PlayTable is not only the first mixed reality console, it’s the first console meant for a social gaming experience.
And all of this came to be when you follow the simple trend that is tabletop board games. What is it about these cardboard games that so captures our hearts? The secret is not about the gameplay, it’s about who you are playing with. It’s that to trade resources with someone, you don’t just press a button. You actually have to say “Hey — anyone want some wool? I’ve got some wheat.” And that’s just not an experience you can have with virtual reality, with traditional consoles, with mobile games. And that is why we choose a mixed reality.
Mixed reality is a way for imagination to come to life without harming it. In virtual reality, players are put into a world that was created for them — much like watching a movie. In mixed reality, players are immersed in a world that they imagine only if they imagine it so — more like reading a book. The PlayTable is 100% authentic to the player. The greatest experience for kids on the PlayTable is evident when their eyes light up the first time they put a toy on the screen. We’ve always imagined our toys to be more than the plastic that they are — to have their own personalities and special abilities. Now those toys are coming to life in a way that seems unreal, but, in a way it always was real.
